From traditional pub to Romford's first smokehouse
A Traditional English Pub with a Smoky Twist
The Saxon King has been a cornerstone of the Harold Hill community for decades. Owner Jane Phillips bought the pub back in 2000 and has spent over 25 years making it one of the most welcoming locals in Romford — a place where regulars become family.
In August 2025, Jane and her partner Spencer took things to the next level by launching the smokehouse kitchen. They invested in a Buddy 48 Smoker and built a purpose-designed 21-foot container kitchen in the refurbished beer garden — with regulars volunteering to help with the build. The result: Romford's first dedicated smokehouse.
Our pitmaster smokes everything low and slow — our signature beef brisket spends a full 14 hours in the smoker, developing an incredible bark and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Every rack of ribs, every pulled pork shoulder, and every batch of burnt ends is crafted with patience and passion.
We pair our BBQ with a rotating selection of craft ales, premium spirits, and hand-crafted cocktails. Whether you're stopping in for a pint and some wings or bringing the family for a full smokehouse feast, you'll always find a warm welcome at The Saxon King.
